Agera långsiktigt och kidnappade av rektorn = utveckling!

Så.. intressant vecka må jag säga!

Godafton kära bloggläsare - det är en ära att mina ord läses av en så välartad samling människor.

Först vill jag berätta om vad som hände igår eftermiddag. Jag och Jonathan kommer hem, trötta och sega efter en lång arbetsdag i biblioteket. Vi hinner vara hemma i cirka 30 minuter, då jag bytt om för att ge mig ut och springa, då rektorn på skolan vi jobbar på (Mr. Langa) knackar på och säger att vi måste skynda oss ut i bilen så han kan köra oss till ett möte där vi ska marknadsföra vårt projekt.

Vad tänker gubben nu, tänkte jag.

Det visar sig att herr Langa har suttit och snackat med någon slags überchef för The Northwestern Department of Education - Mr. Monale (tror jag..). Herr Langa har då berättat för herr Monale om M-ubuntu, smartphone projektet, och herr Monale blev så intresserad att han tyckte att vi absolut måste komma direkt och berätta mer. Jag och Jonathan fattar inte riktigt vad som hänt, men förklarar och säljer projektet med god anda! Herr Monale nästintill fnittrar av upphetsning när vi säljer projektet, och bestämmer sig för att kalla in sin IT-nisse - som också överöser oss med en kavalkad av frågor!

Efter ett 40 minuter långt möte går jag och Jonathan förvirrade därifrån. På måndag, alltså fyra dagar från tillfället, ska "learning experts" och "IT-specialists" (och många mer coola titlar man önskade att man hade) komma till vår skola och undersöka Mobile Learning, till syfte att se om projektet kan implementeras på skolor över hela provinsen, och kanske ännu längre. Vänta - va? Jag satt på rummet helt fredligt i mina joggingkläder, dvs shorts och T-shirt som passade mig för sex år sedan, blir kidnappad till ett möte med distriktets utbildningschef (fortfarande iförd kläder från 2005) och slutar upp med att kanske expandera projektet minst på provinsnivå..

Det är fortfarande alldeles för tidigt för att veta något säkert - men tycker fortfarande att det är ballt. Om man ska göra skillnad för utbildning här i Sydafrika är det faktiskt dessa människor man ska jobba med, och deras första intryck är otroligt positivt. Hoppas allt klaffar!

Nästa del i inlägget kommer göra så att inlägget verkar otroligt långt - men frukta inte! Jag klipper in något som jag, Jonathan och Thabang skrev tidigare i veckan - våra långsiktiga mål med projektet och hur vi ska realisera dem. Vi har kommit fram till att om vi ska göra någon skillnad för situationen här i Sydafrika måste vi redan nu komma på saker vi vill och kan förändra - därav denna lista. Om du inte är intresserad av denna lista avslutar vi redan här kära läsare! Vem du än är, så är jag relativt säker på att du är saknad! Man får för sig att sakna de mest konstiga människor när man är helt bortkopplad från de vanliga. De allra bästa vännerna liksom de mest distanta mamma/pappa-bekanta..

Long-term goals for the VITAL project

1. Mobile Learning

1.1  Develop Mobile Learning, especially within LAWW, to become an effective tool to improving Literacy, Numeracy and Learning.

-       Mobile Learning needs to be related to the syllabus and work schedule of the schools.  We need to acquire the different work schedules and lesson plans (e.g for term 1) to see in what areas and contexts we should plan our M-learning lessons

-       Relating to point 3.1, we should create a manual of M-learning lesson-plans for the purpose of improving M-learning within LAWW and in turn, M-learning in general.

1.2  Teach and encourage the use of smartphones among educators and tutors

-       For a longterm impact, the educators and tutors within each institution should need to be engaged in M-learning. This would be an ideal situation where the various education institutions would have opportunity and possibility to integrate mobile learning in their daily teaching.

-       For this to happen we need the teachers to have knowledge about M-learning and know how the smartphones work

1.3  Create a virtual library for M-learning, with student assignments, content for the phones and lesson plans and instructions

- Instead of deleting content and lesson plans after we use them, we will compile them in a virtual library on a computer. The lessons should be evaluated and revised if necessary, and should act as a base for M-learning lessons in various areas. This means we will have access to but will not be restricted by an abundance of already finished lessons and content.

1.4  Develop lasting software for the project

- We would like to have software to create activities on the phones, such as MyLearning Author. This software could be used by the entire organisation.

1.5  Investigate possibility to work with aspiring teachers

- We believe that aspiring teachers could be open to new and innovative ways of learning to a great extent. We could invite aspiring teachers to the Mobile Learning conference we would be working with.

2. Mogakolodi Masibi Secondary School

2.1 Make English the most spoken language at Mogakolodi as well as make it a natural part of the school.

- Enforce English at our own lessons, namely the Life Orientation/P.E lessons we are in charge of.

- Brainstorm about how we can motivate the students to WANT to speak English at School.

- Organize a voluntary project that would be supervised by VITAL but would be run by students. An example of this could be a school newsletter – where students write, research and speak English outside of class time.

- Collaborate with teachers to ensure that English is also spoken outside of class time – especially between learners and teachers. The teachers should act as rolemodels when it comes to English. If the teachers do not believe and implement that English should be the most spoken language – we will not make a change. We need the teachers on board and fully committed to that cause.

This point needs some clarification. There has been significant improvement of English speaking at Mogakolodi since we came – even though teachers and learners aren’t always communicating in English. This is especially true inside the classrooms and to the VITAL volunteers. Even though we would like more “every-day” communication to be in English (in order to make English more laid back and natural) – we have to accept that things have to happen gradually and appreciate that things are changing.

2.2 Make the library a useful and lasting resource at Mogakolodi

- In order for the library to be useful the teachers need to be aware of what is available and what is not. We think that if we cooperate more with the teachers this problem will sort itself out.

- Improve the library in various areas such as internet, dividers, bigger selection of books, magazines, newspapers etc.

- Transfer the needed knowledge to run the library (system, categorization, use and resources) to an employee at Mogakolodi. To make the library a lasting resource we need the school to be able to run it independently.

2.3 Improve the results of the students at Mogakolodi

-       Run the study hall in the school for the time being (moving into indepent management)

-       Mobile Learning projects, either in collaboration with teachers or in a M-learning class with allotted time on the timetable.

3. Learning Academy Worldwide

3.1 Smoothen the transition between volunteer groups to avoid unnecessary problems and quicken orientation

- Create a manual with systems, pointers and information as to how the VITAL project should/could be run so that new volunteers can avoid feeling like they are kept in the dark about how things should be run. This manual should also contain long-term goals and fundamental features of LAWW as an organization. An information and training guide. This should also, when possible, be discussed in person as well.

3.2 A functioning website, possibly with a blog run by VITAL volunteers.

- We believe that LAWW should have a “face to the world”. We think that our part, as VITAL volunteers, could be that we keep an updated blog and report on what we are doing through this blog. However, we think that it would be too much to take upon us to create this entire function and manage “the PR section” of LAWW in the VITAL project. Except from the VITAL blog, the rest of the PR-functions should be run of a different part of the organization – in our opinion.
